Welcome to the web site of St. Stephen Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church. Here, you can discover information about our parish, culture, and Orthodox Christianity. We hope that your journey here will be educational, informative, and spiritual.

History of St. Stephen Church

The first church was built in 1915 on Blackford St. across from Military Park in downtown Indianapolis. During WWII our congregation began to move to different parts of the city. In December of 1954 construction began at our present location at 14th and Medford. The church was completed in 1955. On October 14, 1962 our church was concecrated by Metropolitan Arch-Bishop Andrey.

We celebrated our 100TH ANNIVERSARY with a GALA CELEBRATION on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Indiana History Center on the canal in downtown Indianapolis.  Metropolitan Joseph, Bishop Daniil, Fr. Dimitur and six other Orthodox priests celebrated with us.  The event was sold out. Our church was one of five original churches begun in the United States and Canda under the Bulgarian Diocese.

The Bulgarian School Indy, founded by +Valentin Pentchev and Ralitsa Kolarova in 2019, meet weekly in our fellowship hall on Saturday mornings at 9:30 am. They have curriculum for grades K-5, religious class, cultural tradition and language classes, music, and more.  Additional information available at: ralis_k@yahoo.com

CHRIST IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD, BY DEATH TRAMPLING UPON DEATH

Beloved children of our Holy Church. God blessed us again this year to pass through the Holy forty-days to joyfully meet the brightness of CHRIST'S RESURRECTION--THE FEAST OF FEASTS and the CELEBRATION of CELEBRATIONS.                           The messenger from heaven said:  Why are you looking to a tomb for someone, who is alive? HE is not here! HE is RISEN. Luke 24:5                                                                                                                                                                                                   Yes, brothers and sisters, CHRIST IS RISEN! Today every being will rejoice. Death, the implacable destroyer of life is vanquished. Its terrible embrace is torn. CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS ALIVE! He appeared to Peter, Mary Magdalen, the Apostles, and to Paul. Paul saw the RISEN GOD and his singing soul asked with irony the ancient ruler: O Death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? I Corinthians 15:55.                                                                                                                                       CHRIST IS RISEN! And with this event, our life obtains sensible meaning.                                                                                         CHRIST IS RISEN! Death cannot scare us anymore. It is not a fatal end. No! It is passing from decay to immortality.                     On this festive day, let's rejoice as did Jesus's disciples, when they saw the resurrected SAVIOR. Let the joy of Christ's resurrection lead us in the beautiful garden of the spirit to see the blooming bright virtues, and to saturate our thirst with the LIFE- GIVING WATER of the RESURRECTED WORD.                                                                                                                                                                                                                Very Reverend Father Dimitur Angelov
